Match Preview: Chicago City v. Red Stars Reserves

Record (W-D-L): Chicago City (1-3-4, 6 pts., 5th in conference) v. Red Stars Reserves (5-2-1, 17 pts., 1stin conference)

Kickoff Time & Location: July 14, 8pm, Chicago

Chicago City aims to avenge its season-opening loss as they get set to take on the leaders in the WPSL Lake Michigan Conference, the Red Stars Reserves.

City are coming off an absolutely heartbreaking result against Bavarians, extending their winless streak to six matches. A deflected shot ended up in the back of City’s net in the 95th minute, allowing Bavarians to salvage a draw.

Head Coach Nick Mulvaney described the equalizer as, “an absolute killer”, and that goal most likely killed any chances of City finishing in the top four this season.

The season has falled short of expectations, especially when looking at City’s results in the 2019 season, where they finished second and Mulvaney received Coach of the Year honors.

“This season has only been disappointing results-wise,” Mulvaney said. “Everything else has been really great. Training has been excellent, the girls have progressed so well individually and, most importantly as a group.”

City have been in every single match this season, with three draws and all but one of their four losses by just a single goal. Bavarians themselves are still challenging for the title and City were a minute away from gaining four points from the two matches played against them.

“We have played some great soccer this season,” Mulvaney continued. “We created so many good chances and, to be honest, really deserved some luck along the way, which you need to be pushing for the title.”

The only loss by more than one goal City have suffered this season came from their season-opening loss to Red Stars Reserves, the team they face on Wednesday night.

However, the Reserves have struggled in their own right. They have only won one of their previous four matches (2D, 1L). The team most thought would run away with the Lake Michigan Conference title now find two teams within three points with two matches still to play.

All in all, Red Stars Reserves will have everything to play for Wednesday night. “[Red Stars Reserves] are always such a massive test for us,” Mulvaney said. “But we have grown so much since that last game and so I am excited for the girls to give it a real good go.”

Mulvaney’s attitude towards this match seems to have resonated with his side as seen by City player Jazmin Castanon’s comments on the upcoming match. “[That game against Reserves] was our first real game as a team. We were able to see what worked and what did not work. I think we have adapted more as a team and have built off that first game.”

To be fair, since that first game against Reserves, City have achieved a result in a majority of their game. However, only one win has come from those matches, something that City will be looking to correct as the heavy underdog on Wednesday night.
