“At this point, we are just ready to get some games under our belt so I believe the girls are just excited to build on the momentum of playing games at this level.” That is Chicago City Head Coach Nick Mulvaney on the mentality of his side heading into their second match of the WPSL season.
That match will see FC Milwaukee Torrent visit City, as the home side will look for their first win of the season. The Red Stars Reserves side defeated City earlier in the week, 5-0. While the scoreline suggested a dominating performance from the Reserves, there still were many positives to take away.
“Our mentality after the loss was actually pretty positive,” City player Hope Baisley said, “The Red Stars are a great opponent and they definitely tested us, but there were a lot of great learning points we took away from the game and we are ready and excited to play Torrent on Saturday.”
City was only down by a single goal at halftime in their match versus Red Stars Reserves, the product of a game plan that frustrated City’s opponents and saw the home side create a few chances of their own.
And even though the Reserves eventually did break the game wide open in the second half, City continued to fight with passion and effort, something Mulvaney says is instilled in all of his players every year.
But results are what count the most in this league and City will aim to achieve their first result against a tough opponent. Torrent won their first match of the season 2-1 against Green Bay Glory last weekend.
On top of that, City will be playing this match on only three days rest while Torrent will have had the full week to prepare. Mulvaney knows this will be a great test for his players.
“Torrent are always very well organized and physical,” the City head coach said, “They possess a quick counter-attack and will provide a strong challenge for our girls but nothing we are not used to.”
Baisley leaned on the positives from the past match as guidance for how City will need to play on Saturday. “I thought our first half against Red Stars Reserves was really impressive. Now, our main goal is to keep that intensity and make sure that it continues for the entire game.”
Baisley continued, “We defended well in the first half too and hopefully we can come out on Saturday with a bit more of an attacking mindset and put the ball in the back of the net.”
