Chicago City Loses Late Lead, Draw Glory 2-2

Updated: Nov 4, 2021

Chicago City drew the Green Bay Glory last weekend at two goals a piece. Late drama ensued at the Lions for Hope Sports Complex as City took the lead with what they thought was the winner in the 87th minute, only to lose their lead in the 89th minute.

“It was a tough game as it always is versus Green Bay, but it really felt like a loss,” said City Head Coach Nick Mulvaney. “We started out as planned and created some good chances, which we again needed to take and maybe then it’s a different game.”

City did control possession and the flow of the match for large chunks of the first half. There was a multitude of chances for City’s attacking players, including captain Hope Baisley.

“I thought we were very attacking-minded, which was an improvement from our previous games,” Baisley said. Even though chances were there for the taking, however, City could not capitalize and the game remained scoreless at the break.

But it was the other captain who finally broke the deadlock. Gabby Whittinghill took a lovely shot on her right foot around 18 yards from goal on the left-wing and the ball gently curled into the side-netting for the game’s opening goal.

But the Glory responded as City continued to fail at taking advantage of the chances they kept creating. “As the game went on, we felt Green Bay begin to gain confidence and they created too many chances for my liking,” Mulvaney said.

Glory equalized just 15 minutes after Whittinghill’s wonder goal, only to see City take the advantage once again late on in the 87th minute. But the Glory refused to quit as an 89th minute equalizer was to seal the draw for Glory, giving them their first point of the season.

“It certainly is two points dropped in our minds,” Mulvaney said. “ We played well again and deserved more but we began to see a dip in intensity throughout the game which we must improve upon.”

City must certainly do that as they face one of their toughest tests in Bavarians this upcoming weekend in Milwaukee. Bavarians will be coming off handing Red Stars Reserves their first loss of the season.
